Continuing Education

Baring any unforeseen events, I will be going back to school this fall. I have incredibly mixed feelings about this. There is a part of me that feels like this is just a huge waste of time; that I am not going to gain anything new and I just need to accept the fact I wont ever work anything but a dead end job. Because I clearly have not learned anything since graduating college.

I miss the person I used to be. I miss her dreams. I miss her starry eyed wonder at life.

Letting go of dreams and goals is difficult. It hurts. The realization that the only thing you have ever wanted isn't going to happen. Every sacrifice that seemed so necessary and now isn't. The time I could have spent with friends. All of the little experiences I missed out on. I try to live life with few regrets. Being able to move past painful events means taking the time to mourn.

If everything had gone as planned I would have been graduating with a Masters this year. I would have a finished manuscript in the process of being published. I would be living in a tiny house in Arizona with a library instead of a bedroom. I would be traveling, writing and loving life.

The worst part is knowing it's all my fault. I didn't do everything possible to make it happen. I was to stressed out, I was to busy with work or I finally had a day off and didn't feel like trying.

I've had four years to accomplish something, anything, and I have nothing. I have done nothing to pursue my dream. I have been so terrified of failure and the unknown that I lost the ability to live. The dream was to big. I can no longer call myself a writer, because I do not write.

This is me saying goodbye to that dream. This is me saying goodbye to a younger more naive me.

I am not entirely sure what I am going to aim for now, I don't have a new dream to pursue. I do have an idea of what I want out of life and to get that I need to go back to school. I have always done better with short term goals and if I have learned anything as an adult it is to play to strengths. I know going back to school is going to feel weird, I know how difficult it will be and I know I won't have a problem. I also know that no matter how grumpy I am feeling about it right now I am going to love it once I get started.

I tried to decapitate my toe

Yesterday afternoon we were getting ready for a picnic when I cut open the bottom of my toe/foot area. It was highly unpleasant. And kind of embarrassing. My mom asked me to grab something from the pantry (our pantry is like 10 feet tall). It was barely out of my reach. Instead of taking the minute or so of time to move stuff around and set up the step ladder I decided to be time efficient and just jump up and grab it.

In retrospect it does seem like a dumb decision. However, I have lived in this house for over a year and jumped up to grab items on numerous occasions. At the time it seemed a reasonable action to take.

I landed on something and it hurt. It felt like a paper cut, a sharp stabbing pain. I looked down, this was possibly another mistake. Blood had gushed out of my foot all over the floor. There was a small puddle of blood on the pantry floor that was getting bigger while I put pressure on my foot. I turned my foot over and could see into my toe. A flap of skin had popped open, it looked like someone had tried to peel all the skin off. I freaked out.

My family members all rushed to the kitchen to see what they could do to help. After looking at the wound they decided it needed stitches. They bandaged up the toe in an attempt to stop the bleeding and took my to InstaCare.

Unfortunately the place was located in an intersection that is under construction. Traffic was at a standstill and we took the side roads, which ended up being blocked off and we did a circle around the building before getting to the lot. My father was driving and was not happy with the traffic. I was sitting in the middle of the back seat with my foot propped up on the passenger side seat. I did what most people do. I texted my best friends a picture of my bandaged foot. Responding to their messages kept me from freaking out about getting stitches. I have never had stitches before.

The clinic was basically empty. I am assuming it's because of the horrible traffic. I got in to see a doctor in what is probably record time. I am almost positive you can't really read my handwriting on the information form. I probably should have had my father fill it out, but it's a little late for that.

The nurse was very nice. I remember she had on these light blue cowboy boots and black scrubs. She also had a really nice voice when she said my heart rate was elevated. Had I not been in so much pain it would have been funny in a I wan to punch you sort of way.

Had that nurse been the doctor things would have gone better. He came in and it all went down hill from there. He was an older, heavy man with a slow, wanna be Texas drawl. (I say want to be because it's Wyoming and most people from Wyoming who try and effect a Texas drawl don't do it right.) After looking at my foot he declared it a superficial lesion slapped two bandages on it and sent me home.

It was slightly more involved than that but the whole visit couldn't have taken more than fifteen minutes. I have a gouge out of the bottom of my toe and slice out of the side. The side cut almost looks like my skin just burst open. It's disturbing to look at. What's slightly more disturbing is that the bottom gouge connects to the side slice so that half of my toe skin can flap up.

I spent most of the examination gritting my teeth and trying not to bitch every time his pudgy fingers poked the open wound. For some reason the doctor did not realize, or possibly care, that it was really only one cut. He kept saying it didn't need stitches. Now it is possible there was nothing to keep the stitches in and they would only cause more problems but that isn't what he said. The doctor also told me I would be able to walk on it with out any problems. He only told me that after I asked. He also said I could take ibuprofen or Tylenol but didn't say how often or how much. Which I found highly irritating because I try to never take pain medicine if I could to something else to alleviate the pain, like drinking more water or eating something different.

By the time I got home I had already bled through the bandages the doctor had put on. I was so tempted to call them back and bitch at him. He had specified, the only thing he'd actually told me to do, that I needed to change the bandages once a day for the next ten days or so. When I'd asked if I would need to do more than that he'd said in a very snooty voice, "Once a day will be fine."

Subtext "I am the doctor, this is not a real problem."

You know when you can just hear what someone is saying?
That's what happened then. The doctor had decided I was a young woman who came in because of a little cut. Problem solved.

Even the nurse asked if he should look at it from another angle. If you are a doctor what would it hurt to have another look at something? It would have taken less then a minute and might have possibly made my life a little easier. It's not like he had another patient to look at.

Instead of him doing his job my mother has bandaged up my toe and I've been on bed rest. Which is very boring. Very boring. And quite possibly the only reason I wrote this post. Because every time I get up and walk around blood starts leaking all over the place. It's messy and disgusting.

Buddha is my copilot

It's a literal statement. I have a Buddha statue bookend that a friend gave me (read: I absconded with it) and  have as yet to take into my temporary abode. Temporary because if I don't use that word I get all depressed and feel like a failure for living in my parents basement after getting a college degree. A degree I haven't really used in the last year. Because I am the ultimate in lazy. And exhausted.

There are so many things I took for granted when growing up. Ideas, mostly, but other things. Like the fact that I have parents who let me make my own mistakes. People who let me grow into an adult without the horrors of clinging parents. I will admit that some days I almost wish I'd had parents who took a large interest in me as a teenager. And then I realize how obnoxious and over bearing and irritating that would have been and I am unbelievably thankful my parents have brains. Not that clingy parents don't have brains; they just don't use them.

Complete candor. I thought I was done with the whole social awkwardness thing after high school. And to an extent that's true. It's just awkward in new and unpleasant ways. Like explaining how I really don't want to be in a serious relationship. I really will never be going back to church (exceptions being family events: baptisms and stuff) and while I am thankful I grew up in a minority, conservative religion it is not something I subscribe to anymore. Growing up in a minority group, and it is a minority group even though it has nothing to do with ethnicity or race, can give people a better understanding of love and compassion. Those two ideas have been the prominent cornerstones of my life so far and will continue to be the ideal I measure life by.

All of which is a last ditch effort to keep my family members and friends from being too judgmental when I say that I am not a Christian. Nor will I be leaning that direction for decades, if not the rest of my life. A few people will read this and not be at surprised; the rest will be mildly disappointed but not overly shocked. I really hope there is no one who reads this and is completely shock. If you are completely gobsmacked take comfort in the fact that we must not be friends, or even remote acquaintances anymore.

A large part of me wants to just bury this post, delete it and pretend that everything is fine. And that would be wrong. Both to myself and my family. I have been told I'm brutally honest. Something I've been working to change, honesty is good but brutal honesty can be deadly. Certain situations require tact or just straight up silence. For the last two years I assumed this would be the best case scenario. Just keep quite, don't speak up and don't disappoint anyone.

And now we get to the real problem. I have a fantastic family (a little crazy, but totally awesome) and friends who would drop everything if I needed them. I do not want to be a disappointment. I don't want to become just another statistic that gets shown to teenagers in church school about adults that leave the church. The fear is just about crippling. I grew up with these people, went to little one room grade schools, a boarding academy and a college that were all part of one institution, one religion. I know that I could go to any major city in the world and find an Adventist church. Even if I didn't speak the language, wasn't dressed right and was completely inept in their culture they would take me in. No questions asked. Because we shared a religion. It's kind of awe-inspiring.

When looking back on it I am surprised I could walk away like I did. Granted it wasn't very far and very, very few people knew. And now I guess more do.

Basically what I'm saying is that I can't lie to people anymore. Even by omission. And then asking very nicely that you not hate me.

But mostly it's a huge thank you to Justin. You are possibly the most brave person I know.
And a thank you to Bex, for not letting me crawl into a hole and pretend the world doesn't exist.

Owls, but not the Harry Potter kind

I was feeling exceptionally lazy which is why there is all that awesomeness below. Some of these I choice specifically for my magical design friends. They will know which ones I am talking about, hopefully they laugh as hard as I did when they read it... if they read it. Enjoy.

Common courtesies

Seriously people, I would love it if when I was being lied to the person would take the time to make sure the story could hold water. Or jello. Hell I would be down if it could hold a freaking brick. I consider it to be a common courtesy to not lie. But if someone is going to than it's a common courtesy to tell an interesting story. If  you're going to lie make it good. Make sure the story makes sense and doesn't contradict something you said yesterday, or this morning, or five minutes ago.

I am not a complete idiot and I get highly offended when someone lies blatantly to my face and then tries to make it sound like I just didn't understand. I understand perfectly and I can guarantee that if someone continually lies to me I am not going to believe a word out of their mouth. Ever. And if you are someone who lies please do not get super offended when no one believes you anymore. Either that or take lying to a professional level.

Here is a list of professions almost required to lie:
1. Politicians
2. Lawyers
3. Hotel concierge
4. Dressing room attendant
5. Actors/Actresses
6. Writers

Working with the public

Apparently the book review idea was a flop, seeing as how I have yet to write one. Or start writing one. My mother has finally set down an ultimatum about me finding a job and it really sucks. I know I need to find a job, but what she wants is just sooo not going to happen. Because there is no way I am giving her the satisfaction of me not having a job by next week. Part of the problem was I had (and this is mostly past tense now) no idea what I wanted to do, in the long run. I couldn't decide between working a crap job and going to grad school for an MFA in creative writing or trying to get a career type job in the communication field.

After four years of studying communication I kind of don't want to work in that area. It's fun, it's kind of fulfilling, but it's also really difficult to find a company whose morals I agree with. And that's something I have never gotten my parents to understand. When working in a public relations job it's not about the products, it's all about the company and it's reputation. If the company doesn't live up to that reputation then I have been selling a lie. I don't like selling lies, I hate feeling like I duped someone. It's unpleasant, unprofessional, and it happens all the time. Most people aren't even aware of the messages they're being fed, of the half truths a company spouts off after a major disaster. I could be a great asset to a PR team, but I don't want to be. I'd like to believe I still have morals.

Not that all companies are evil, most aren't, but people in power have a nasty habit of trying to spin things instead of being honest. The general public is a lot more forgiving of an honest company that apologizes for a mistake than a company that tries to cover one up. And it's almost always up to the crisis PR team to convince the CEO that the best answer is honesty.

You can run, but you can't hide.

From responsibility. It will find you. The longer you run the harder it will hit.

A true statement brought to you by someone who has been running for a long time and is not looking forward to the comeuppance I am about to receive.

The worst thing about being an adult is that it is your fault when things don't get done on time. I can no longer blame my parents, my teachers, friends or siblings if my life is falling apart. It's all me. Not exactly an easy thing to admit.

I originally decided to stop blogging because I felt it would leave me with more time to work on my manuscripts. That was a joke. I tried... who am I kidding. I never even opened the documents. I looked into my writing folder and promptly fled. I couldn't handle the failure that is innate in writing. The days spent tied to a chair, fingers flying across the keyboard in a desperate attempt to drag something out of my brain. I don't know of any other career area that has the same level of epic failure. Maybe art, or acting. Those areas have the same problem. An over abundance of people trying to break-out, break-in or just break something.

Makes it difficult to do anything worth while.

Plus the number of horrible books that have been published makes me sick. I can't believe some of the crap that is out there. It's ridiculous. And the fact that some people like it is mind blowing. I think everyone should take a rhetoric class, maybe then the level of crap would decrease (in my happy world it does).

So starting sometime later this week I am going to be doing book reviews, mostly because I had a friend as me to give her a list of books that are worth reading. And to go along with the list I am going to give her reviews so she has an easier time choosing.

Getting caught really hurts and may end in death.

Showering in the space time continuum

I got up freakishly early today, for a variety of reasons. First off I had lost one of my pillows sometime in the night, this is highly disturbing because then I am not cocooned in by pockets of cottony goodness and can't sleep. Then my mother came in, don't even know how early that is, and wanted to talk about me getting a job. And finally I got out of bed, before 9 a.m. (which is just wrong) because the newest resident got hired and needed to take a drug test. Which I then didn't have to take him too, so really I should be back in bed sleeping right now. But I drank to much coffee.

Mommy always turns the dishwasher on right before she leaves for school (she's a teacher, not a student). Normally this doesn't cause any problems, but since I was up so early I wanted to take a shower. Unfortunately someone got in before me, that combined with the dishwasher means I had a cold shower. Cold showers make me extremely grumpy. I tend to take that out on other people in any way I can. Including barraging them with stupid stories from college. It was great.

A COLD shower? I kill you! (photo)

What's even better is that now I am in the house alone, well except for the dog, the cat and the lurking spider (aka my brother).

While attempting to decide what I should blog about today I ended up letting my coffee get cold. I decided to nuke it and pray the microwave didn't just burn it (it always does anyway, and I drink it anyway). I opened the microwave and there was a plate, an empty dinner plate, just sitting in the middle of the glass tray. It was the most bizarre thing ever. Which can all be explained by the fact that my mother constantly breaks the space time continuum (it's possible!), it must have gotten tired of it and started pushing all of her crap back into the real dimension. Let's just hope that doesn't happen inside somebody's head. Unless it's the lurking spider, he can get a plate in the head, it would be funny.

If they space time continuum was a person it would totally be  him. (Photo)

My ghetto car

Well something fantastic happened to my car. The door handle fell off on the inside driver door. Meaning I have to roll down my window to get out of the car. Or I could crawl over the middle console thingy and out the other door. One of the more annoying things is that I have a manual window, and the lock is right above the door so half the time I lock myself in while trying to get out. I look like an idiot.

Which is so different than normal. Not.

We got a new roommate, so now the house has six adults living here. Well, more like five adults and one teenager. I feel like most teenagers are able to make responsible decisions and shouldn't have their wings clipped because some stodgy adult can't handle the fact that there baby is growing up.

I am glad my parents never really did that to me. It would have ended really badly.

Of course I also subscribe to the free choices philosophy in life. If someone knows they are making a stupid decision and they choose to do that anyway, who am I to stop them. I've gotten a lot of grief over that opinion, some people don't understand how I can stand callously by and watch my friends destroy their lives. It was their choice, if I can't respect their ability to choose how can I call myself their friend? That doesn't mean I don't care, it doesn't mean I want them making those choices, and it doesn't mean I won't be there to help them pull themselves back together.

I firmly believe the world would be a better place if people laid off and let adults be adults. Even if that means their being childish. It would take all the fun out of rebelling. How could a teenager rebel if their parents just sit back and let them at the world.

And this went all  philosophical when I meant to complain about my car. Heh.

The insurance stuff has finally been taking care of from my last accident. But the windshield wipers still suck.

Why would anyone buy this?

I cannot justify anyone spending this much on a watch. Seriously. What the hell.

This watch costs $86,999.99. And that is on sale. I don't care how much you save by buying this watch on Amazon compared to other places. That is to much money to spend on a watch.

And some dude bought it while he doesn't own a home, or a nice car.

Again, what the hell. I can't even see why this watch is so cool. It looks ridiculous.

You can find all the details here.

I am still mind blown over this. It's crazy. I want someone to buy me this watch so I can sell it and make a ton of money.

Youtube videos I don't really understand

While cleaning my room yesterday I found a door name plate thingy I made in college. It's in the shape of a unicorn and has best friends name on one side and Charlie on the other. My mother did not get the Charlie the Unicorn reference. At all. So I pulled up the video and we watched it.

It was way worse than I remember. Not very difficult to do since I pretty much watched it all the time and laughed hysterically each time. But the video makes no sense and the ones that follow are even worse.

Well I just recently watched the Nyan Cat video. And wow, it's really bad. It's super cute, and intensely repetitive and some how despite all that I kind of like it.

However I found that the videos made by Nyan Cat fans were way cooler. Like this one here.

Then there is the hilarious Silent Monks videos. Those are great.

And let's not forget all the funny videos shown to me by friends.

I cannot find this video on the blogger youtube thingy so just click here.

Anyway. That should be enough videos to sufficiently mind numb anyone. I do enjoy a great youtube clip, but some days it's nice to step back and realize "these videos are horrible, in a funny way."

Nothing to see here

Nothing interesting has happened in the last 24 hours. My life has been unbelievably boring (except my car is dead. Dead as in doesn't even make awkward noising when trying to start it). So nothing has happened. I slept, ate and slept some more. It was pretty grand. All very exciting. I am sure I could write an entire novel based on my life.

It would be the shortest story ever.

A friend suggest I start a pinterest page... I wasn't really sure what it was to begin with. The concept is interesting, pinning interesting pictures all in one place is a rather ingenious idea. The only problem is that my internet experience lately is focused on about ten different sites.

1. Blogger
2. gmail (since if I don't check it frequently it gets way bogged down)
3. facebook
4. xkcd
5. fy art student owl
6. Dr. Cat
7. Amazon
...
8. Lolz cats
9. Other pages from icanhascheezburger.com
...

There isn't a ten. Apparently I don't even go to ten different sites.

Oh. I guess ten would be google+ but I basically never get on. So not sure that should really count.

Anyway. I am having issues withe whole pinterest thing because of that. I pretty much just bum at home and read or watch tv. Which I could list all the shows I think are worth watching but that takes some serious effort. I am a big fan of things that require nill in the effort department.

Which is why I have this loverly comic from xkcd, just for you. Because everyone knows that a blog isn't a blog unless it has awesome followers. And since you are reading my blog that automatically makes you awesome, at least averagely awesome, which is good enough for me.

I really want to do this sometime. If only I had friends who would factor time.

I have out done myself

My blog has hit over 2,000 views for all time. Which is awesome, except last month I had over 600 views and now all I can think about is "How am I going to even close to that this month?"

It's a little intimidating.

I have out blogged myself. And I didn't even know that was possible.

A very good friend of mine has decided he is going to blog everyday for an entire year. My hat is off to him, that is really impressive. I am just trying to blog through the week and some (most) of the time even that is crazy.

A new year is always so full of possibilities, it makes people believe that if they dream and work hard enough anything is possible. It seems to me that I have lost the point of this blog. Originally I started blogging because I wanted a venue to share my poetry (I know, seems totally crazy) and then it sort of morphed into my space to complain about my life story. Now, now it has become a sort of sad hybrid of funny satirical commentary on life and my stupid choices. It's amusing, but I have never put any actual thought behind the slow slide of change.

It just sort of happened. I woke up one day and realized that I liked blogging about my awkward life stories, that it made me laugh when I could amuse someone else at my own expense.

My senior of college was rough. Like worst year of my life rough. And I think I have finally moved beyond all the crap that went down. Not that I have forgotten what happened, but I have given myself permission to get over it. And it feels great.

The reason why I never make new years resolutions is because I know myself well enough to realize that I will purposefully fail. Not because I can't do it, but because new years resolutions are made to be broken. Goals are made to be lost, and laws are only followed when I feel like it (and there is a cop around).

I've spent so much time and effort trying to show people I can do what I want that I stopped actually making choices for me.

Which leads me to the whole point of this blog. I have a new slogan for this year.

"I can do it."

My new slogan.
Be jealous.
I know I am.

And on that happy note, here is the lolz cat representation of my year (on second thought, I really hope not).

funny pictures - Oh the future looks so bright today!

New years resolutions. Updated

*

And that is the list of my resolutions for this year. It's the same as last year, and the year before that, and the year before the year before last year. And possible the same as the year before the year before the year before last year.

Because I do not believe in making resolutions, I believe in doing whatever the hell I want.

*Updated: there is no picture. So if you're waiting for one I am very sorry. And yes this is for you. You know who you are.

Why I hate ordering online

I caved and bought the entirety of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was rather excited because it got here today. Seasons 5, 6 and 7 had shattered cases. I am pissed. Mostly because I ordered off of Amazon and that means I am going to have to package up the stupid set and send it back. I really do hate doing that. It makes me angry.

On a rather funny and extremely wrong note, I have just recently found out that POW/MIA stands for Prisoners of War and Missing in Action. Yes. I cannot believe that it has taken me this long to realize that. What's worse is that I used to think the flag was for an African American rights activist group. True story. I am sure you would like to know how on earth I came to that conclusion.

I have a friend who is an activist. She bounces from one group to another trying to make the world a better place. She is pretty freaking awesome. Well she had a POW/MIA flag on her wall and she told me it was in support of her black friend. I had no idea at the time that her friend was in the military, I do not think he was ever MIA and I know he wasn't a POW, but she wanted to support her friends in the military.

Well, idiot that I am, I assumed it was just another activist group she was apart of. It was a little odd because she didn't give me the activist speech which normally came along with announcements for the latest, greatest cause for human rights.

And that is why I thought the POW/MIA flag was the symbol for African American rights. Sad really.

I felt like a complete idiot when I put the pieces together. Unfortunately it took me a few years. May all the people who are in the military, who have served in the military and who are related to people in the military forgive me for being a complete moron.

Never forgotten; but occasionally confused.

I'm gonna wear a lampshade...

funny pictures - SOON.
see more Lolcats and funny pictures, and check out our Socially Awkward Penguin lolz!

This is how I have been feeling lately. I am the bird. This is not a good feeling.

The trip to Texas pretty much killed my blogging and I hope I will be back a to a (semi)regular posting scedule soon.

Um... yeah

So my first adventure in Wyoming next week will be finding a new job, because I just got let go. Because there is a lack of things for me to do. Although my boss-man did tell me that if other stuff comes up they will hire me as a freelance writer. Which is cool. But sucky right now because I no longer have a guaranteed pay check. And I bought a bunch of new clothes so I could actually be simi-dressy at work.

But it's cool. Some how I will over come this latest hurdle and get the awesomest dream job ever. Maybe I will actually go for this whole freelance writing thing. It can't be that hard can it?

Who am I kidding. It's going to be ridiculously difficult.

secret of the universe

People are stupid.

I really hope I didn't ruin anyones idealistic world with that statement. Unfortunately I refuse to take it back on the basis of it's true.

Not much else to say about it.

Only the little things matter

My life has turned into a crazy mass of confusion the last few weeks as I attempted (and failed) to settle everything in for the semester. It seems like I can't keep a thought in my head for more than a few minutes.

When staying up late studying for a quiz I made oatmeal when I remembered I had forgotten to eat earlier in the day. I was so out of it that I forget to eat and found it in the microwave the next morning. It was disgusting. I forget to call people back. The insurance company is being a pain (shocking) so I still can't drive my car anywhere. I spaced writing for the school newspaper and had to turn in an article late. Pretty sure I failed that quiz. It's been a spectacular week.

None of that really bothered me.

What really made me grumpy was realizing I had downed a pot of coffee in less than hour this morning (afternoon). Now I am pissy because I want coffee but I know that more caffeine will keep me up late turning this whole week into a crap fest. I hate my life sometimes.

It's never the big things that screw up a persons day. It's the little things that push them over the edge.

I want coffee.

*pout*
