No seriously, this is going to be a very serious post. Well at least my attempt at being serious, which is questionable at best and giggle inducing at worst.
I read a note today that said "Love never fails."
I am inclined to disagree. Okay, fuck that, I totally disagree. Love fails all the time. Why else is their divorce? Why is there murder? Why to people lie, cheat, scorn, steal, ridicule, mock, and hate?
Basically if "love never fails" why is there so much anger in the world? Anger comes from unfulfilled love, not always, but a lot of the time.
Love is the worst emotion in the world, once you find it you have to work to keep it, and when it's gone the other person has to work to forget it. Basically it's a bunch of work and no play.
If that is the representation of love on this earth, which I strongly believe is, I want no part of it.
I agree with you, taken out of context the phrase "love never fails" is simply a nice, if somewhat naive statement.
ReplyDeleteHowever, taken in context (as quotes really should be used) it is meant to be part of a definition of perfect love - which I think you'll agree, is HARD (if not frakking impossible) to practice.
The entire quote, of course, is as follows:
First Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.
I think it should be taken as less of a statement of fact, and more of a guideline of what love SHOULD be, and the kind of love we should be trying to give, part emotion, part choice. It WOULD be ultimately fulfilling, because it keeps us open to life and happiness, and helps us let go of hurts and grudges. A worthy goal, really. (Whether you believe in Christianity and the Bible or not).
Hah, my comment ended up being longer than your post - weeeeeeeird. I feel kind of bizarre about that!
ReplyDeleteI agree ^^
ReplyDeleteWhether you believe in Christianity and the Bible or not, there is still something out there that is wonderful enough to keep fighting for. Love does fail, but in the way I see it...Love is a choice. It freaking sucks a lot of the time: pain, tears, screaming, loneliness when the person is right next to you...all that happens on an all too frequent basis. But there are still those glimpses of what could be, what is there under all the crap that is life on Earth, that keeps you fighting till theres nothing left to fight for. Its exhausting, but I still believe in love and believe enough to keep fighting.
and I love you. =]
